I agree with the fact that testing an improvement against the preb*vious versions of the same engine is quite biasez. I made the experience with new settings for shredder 7.04 after making a blitz tournament between Sh7 and Sh7.04 (chessbase versions) which ended with a clear win for Sh7 (61.5 vs 38.5). Then camed the idea to try to improve Sh 7.04. I think that testing these engines against other ones is more funny and also a little bit accurate, but i also think that the test against the previous versions is interesting by the fact that the brothers styles are somewhat close and also if the next better engine against the others is weaker than the previous one in head to head tournaments why not still make these tests to find this bizarre matter. Another thing, testing engines even against supposed weaker engines could give many interesting positions and sometimes surprises. This is not published yet but check out this link for more shredder 7.04 settings in a few days for the next up-date: http://members.lycos.co.uk/chesslovers
