You asked about 'chess program' (not engine), so I'll drop in my 2 cents. I
contribute to Java-Chess ( http://www.java-chess.de ) and things might be a bit
different there, since it's an Opensource project, were you have to focus a lot
more on attracting and motivating developers. The short version of my
conclusion: 'be visual'. That's why PGN writing and reading had no big priority
yet, but at the same time we already have a nive UI including timers as an
example. Another point here was the port to J2ME, since I expect to find a lot
more users and developers there. Development is a bit more chaotic there, since
different contributors have different priorities, but overall (I hope) it's more
fun in the long run... ;-)
