recently DGT adopted a USB standard, replacing serial 232. It is my
understanding that ChessAssistant is preparing a new free interim build to
accept the latest DGT boards.
Other than playing over the net in slow time controls.( And live broadcasting of
tournament games) Users may find these boards most useful for quick set-up of a
chess position in order to search a database.

I am not sure your intended use is the best if only because one must keep
looking at the monitor to assign subvariations of entered data. That is,
assuming one uses a digital chess board to avoid using a monitor.
