Thanks Kurt,

I have read something like that in the past. It seems some engines do require
them more than not.

When a program faces itself, it seems to not require them as much as when facing
other opponents. Chess Tiger is the best program I think without tablebases.
Tiger 12, and Tiger 13.0 both didn't have tablebase support, yet dominated all.
In watching it play online, very few times would tablebases have changed the
possible outcome of the game. Very few.

Crafty on the other hand seems to benefit from them very much. I would almost
say that it requires them when facing other programs and humans online. I have
seen it turn drawn games into wins due to the tables, and loses into draws due
to them as well. I have not seen it play to a draw from a winning position.

Shredder also seems to play better with them, just from my point of view though.

Peter.
