Of course GK gets an appearance fee, they always get that.

After the loss to Smirin I never really thought the comps were in any way
"entitled" to a match against GK and VK.
I still doubt they could win a serious match against a well prepared 2600 GM.

But, in the end it's about money, those matches came about because it was good
business for all parties.
