If the software supports connection to FICS, any engines that can normally run
in it locally (either winboard or uci or both for some) , will usually be able
to run on FICS too.

Some programmer will clarify but I think if your engine supports say the normal
xboard/winboard commands ,it will automatically work in FICS too using
Winboard/xboard.

No. You *do* need to apply for a (c) account, but if yours is a home-made unique
engine your chances are higher to get a (c) in theory.

Assuming you leave it on 24 hours a day? Hard to say, depends on how strong
yours is. If yours is say about 2300 FICS standard, you will only be playing
other comps mostly.

Well, what you need is to first select a software that allows chess engines to
connect to FICS. Here's a list www.aarontay.per.sg/Winboard/interface.html
(Look at the colomn that says ICS)

Then see what protocols the software supports. For example, Arena supports both
UCI and Winboard, so both are capable of being run on FICS through Arena.
Xboard/Winboard on the example does Winboard/xboard engines only.

Arena is probably easiest to setup for a freeware product, just point and click.
Winboard is a little tricky.

Well if you choose either Arena or Winboard, the following forums will help you
a lot

Looking around my site at www.aarontay.per.sg/Winboard/ probably isn't that bad
a idea either :).
