Dear Chess Rebel Friends,

You have asked to receive via email my Rebel package for Fritz. This package
allows you to use Rebel 12 for windows (pre beta release) under the F8 GUI
(including Shredder 7, Tiger 15, Junior 8 etc). Rebel is beta and may not
always work perfectly.

The package, when properly installed allows a user to play against Rebel or
match Rebel against other Fritz engines. This early release of Rebel does not
allocate time properly. I also included in the wb2uci.eng file, the option to
slelect through the F8 GUI the many different predefined personalities that
were in the Rebel 12 for DOS final release. You can also add your own.

In addition, I created one personality “Fish” that plays much worse than
“Novice”. I created “Fish” to find a quick way to test my personality loading
commands in wb2uci. It plays so weak, that you will notice after only a few
moves out of book. I’m releasing it for you to test your Rebel installation in
Fritz 8. As a side benefit, it may also be suitable for young beginner players
(children) just learning chess as it will make mistake after mistake. Children
just learning the game will actually have chance to win. You can increase the
strength by in steps by slowly bringing the parameters close to 100 in the
fish.eng. So as your child/grandchild chess playing skills get stronger and
he/she tells you Rebel is “too easy” -- you can turn it up a notch or two.

Installation:

1. Copy your entire Rebel engine folder in the Lokasoft directory to your Rebel
engines folder in Fritz 8. C:\program files\chessbase\engines\rebel is typical.

2.  Rename rebel12.exe in your Fritz 8 /engines/Rebel folder to rebel.12.exe.
(note the extra “.”)

3. IF your Fritz 8 Engine Rebel folder is NOT in the standard:

=================================
C:\Program File\Chessbase\Engines\Rebel
=================================

Edit this line in the “inbetween.ini” file as appropriate. W6 controls the hash
table size as documented.

========================================================
CommandLine := C:\Program Files\ChessBase\Engines\Rebel\rebel.12.exe W6
=========================================================

4. Extract the attached zip file in your Fritz 8 /engines/Rebel folder. You
will note that you now have a “rebel12.exe” file. That is really inbetween.exe
renamed to rebel12.exe.

5. Start Fritz 8. Using the menu, select >ENGINES>CREATE UCI ENGINE…. Point
to the “RebelUci.exe” file (IMPORTANT -> NOT Rebel12.exe or Rebel.12.exe). If
everything went well, you should see “C:\...\Rebel\RebelUci.exe” on the 1st,
“Rebel 12” on the 2nd line and “Ed Schroeder” on the 3rd line.

6. You are now ready to use Rebel in Fritz by selecting the engine command
(F3) and selecting “Rebel 12”.

7.  ENJOY!

Michael Byrne
