Subject: Chess Tiger 15 at Ajedrez [why A. Cabrera lost]

I have again analysed and commented a game won by Chess Tiger 15:

[Event "Ajedrez"]
[Site "Cullera"]
[Date "2003.07.22"]
[Round "7.3"]
[White "Chess Tiger 15.0"]
[Black "Cabrera, Alexis"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "B37"]
[BlackElo "2491"]
[Annotator "Utzinger,K"]
[PlyCount "55"]
[EventDate "2003.07.16"]

1. e4 c5 {Black is ready for a great fight} 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6 {
This move has a bad reputation and one can assume that the computer knows the
best opening line.} 5. c4 Nf6 6. Nc3 d6 7. Nc2 {
A seldom played line: a good strategy against humans} 7... Bg7 8. Be2 Nd7 9.
Bd2 b6 {This could be a novelty in this opening line.} 10. O-O Bb7 11. f3 O-O
12. Qe1 a6 {A natural looking move in this kind of position. Black having less
space must be very careful and to find the right places for its pieces at the
right moment demands an extremely fine chess feeling. From what I have seen so
far, it's in no way an easy position for Black to play vs computers. I would
never be able to manage this situation.} 13. Be3 Re8 {Protects pawn e7 in view
of a coming Nc3-d5 but at the same time gives up the idea f7-f5} 14. Qd2 Rc8
15. b3 Bf8 {For me this is the first sign that Black has lost the thread in
this game. I have studied this position for 15 minutes but could not found out
the purpose of this move} 16. Nd4 Qc7 17. Nd5 Qb8 18. Rad1 Bg7 {Looks again
logical but to do something against White's strong and actively placed pieces
in the centre, Black should also have considered 18...e6. In that case, 15...
Bf8 would at once make some sense} 19. Nc2 Ba8 20. Bh6 Bxh6 {Not best in my
opinion. Why not allow the exchange Bxg7 so that after Kxg7 the dark square h6
is under control of Black? Another option was to keep the strong bishop on the
long diagonal with 20...Bh8} 21. Qxh6 b5 {The first active action of Black} 22.
Rf2 {What's this? For me this dubious rook move does not serve a particular
purpose. I would have expected moves like 22.Nce3, 22.cxb5 or at least 22.Kh1
if White wants to do something against Qb8-a7. Looking more deeply into this
position, I noticed that White could have chosen 22.Rf2 to have the
possibility Rf2-d2: if so, the rook maneouvre is an interesting one.} 22... Na5
{I rather expected 22...bxc4 23.Bxc4 Nce5} 23. Qd2 Nc6 24. Qg5 {Due to the
White attacks the e7-pawn twice, the reply 24...Na5 is no longer possible}
24... bxc4 {My prefernce would have been 24...Kg7 in order to protect the
squares h6 and f6 and at the same time to elimanate possible checks like Nxe7
and Nf6} 25. Bxc4 Qb7 {
I think that Chess Tiger's suggestion Qa7 was a better try} ({Chess Tiger 15.0:
} 25... Qa7 26. Rc1 Bb7 27. Kf1 e6 28. Nde3 Nce5 29. Rd2 Qc5 30. Qh6 Nb6 31.
Nd4 {0.61/14}) 26. Nce3 Nb6 {Apart from some small inaccuracies, Black has so
far defended very well. But this knight move is a tactical error and so the
game comes to a rapid end.} 27. Nxb6 Qxb6 28. Nf5 1-0
