I hope you realize my comment was that the GCC compiler sucks bigtime for
processors with a lot of potential to optimize for. It's not just registers.
GCC should be rewritten from scratch to get much faster. The whole method and
datastructure belonging to that is simply not providing enough easyness for
compiler optimizations to work well.

Basically its design is a compatible design that means that it won't produce
much different code for a 32 bits single chip when compared to a highend opteron
or not to mention an itanium2-madison processor.
