One thing you could do is implement specialized assert statements that save everything to a file before it crashes. I've seen this done before and I was quite suprised. I got a message that said, "This program is about to crash, would you like to save your file now?" Of course, this would mean you would have an idea of where the error was occuring, so this might not help at all in your situation.
