i have noticed significant differences in behavious between ponder off and
ponder on: and you cannot overcome these differences by giving extra time in
ponder off.

shredder and even more so junior have different time management than fritz: each
of them uses up alomost all the allocated time in ponder on while fritz often
uses much less; shredder and even more so junior think for a lot longer in
crucial positions where they have to choose between different lines and play a
lot more quickly at other times when there is only 1 good move; fritz does not
show this  behavior to the same extent;

while playing with ponder off there is much less variation in time used per move
as well as the total time taken for a set number of moves and hence the time
management is almost similar between these programmes;

these differences yield completelty different results in eng vs eng testing; the
performance of shredder7 and junior is hugely better on 2 comps than on 1
against fritz8; if you like i can send you the games and results: as a result of
these differences i have stopped considering any results with ponder off!
