As a programmer you cannot be sure your engine always will be used with ponder on, just like you can't be sure it will always have access to tables bases, or always run on a fast computer with big hash tables etc etc.. You don't know the conditions, so you have to expect and prepare for everything. If an engine is really bad with ponder off, then that's the engine's problem. The user can't make every engine happy all the time, it would be impossible to do tournaments. -S.
