How often would waiting an additional ply "spoil" a 50 move draw? If there was a valid way to make progress, an engine would have likely found it much earlier. Whereas overlooking mate immediately before the draw can be claimed seems much more probable, in any ending involving queens, perhaps some others where the king is caught in a corner of the board.
