This must be a specific problem (or even a bug) in the 7.04 engine version. I have Shredder 7.SE (in-between version between 7 and 7.04), and it plays KR-K without tablebases - folder renamed - perfectly as far as I can tell. I've checked your test game and the one above. S7.SE wouldn't play such useless moves like 89...Kd4? in David's game, instead it announces a mate quickly (Rg7+ etc.). Analysis by Shredder 7.SE (on P3/700 MHz only): 89...Rb6 90.Ke8 -+ (-7.41) Depth: 1/1 00:00:00 -+ (-7.25) Depth: 2/2 00:00:00 89...Rd6+ 90.Ke7 Re6+ 91.Kf7 -+ (-7.26) Depth: 2/3 00:00:00 -+ (-7.35) Depth: 2/4 00:00:00 89...Re6 90.Kc8 -+ (-7.38) Depth: 2/4 00:00:00 -+ (-7.38) Depth: 2/4 00:00:00 89...Rg7+ 90.Ke8 Ke6 91.Kd8 Re7 92.Kc8 Kd6 93.Kb8 Kc6 94.Ka8 Kb6 95.Kb8 Re8# -+ (-7.39) Depth: 2/4 00:00:00 -+ (-#7) Depth: 18/28 00:00:09 2826kN In your game after 29...Kb2, it finds a mate in 6 more or less immediatly (Rb4+ etc.): 30.Rc7 +- (7.32) Depth: 1/1 00:00:00 30.Rb4+ Ka2 31.Kc2 Ka3 32.Kc3 Ka2 33.Rb8 Ka1 34.Kc2 Ka2 35.Ra8# +- (7.63) Depth: 1/2 00:00:00 +- (#6) Depth: 11/15 00:00:00 64kN As you can see: no tbs. involved. There must be something wrong in 7.04 other than any missing knowledge for KR-K, because in these positions, the mate is only a few moves away so the engine should be able to find it "simply" by calculation. Regards, Mike Scheidl (happy Shredder 7.SE user :o))
