I'm finding that the Shredder 7/Fritz 8 GUI is somewhat less friendly with my
Windows 98se operating system than former GUI's. Also I've recently tried the
Classic Shredder 6 GUI, and it is even more friendly than the Fritz/CB GUI's.
Resources are limited in Windows 98se (and Windows Me) and the Classic Shredder
6 GUI uses a lot less of them, so that multitasking other applications becomes
easier and faster for example. In particular large hash tables near the system
limits are handled faster with the Classic Schredder 6 GUI. So there is a
significant difference in speed (kN/s) between those different GUI's which
ahould translate into some difference in playing strength too. As for the actual
lines of analysis, my tests indicate that they are the same with the different
GUI's. There is often some small difference in the depth of calculation numbers
but they are probably trivial. The moves themselves seem to be the same with
different GUI's if you allow for the differences in speed. I suspect that these
differences in speed are less with newer operating systems such as Windows 2000
or XP, but Windows 98se and Me have this problem with limited resources. How
much difference? Well I recently had occasion to do some lengthy analysis of a
position. The starting speed with the Shredder 7 GUI was about 50kN/s after a
minute or two, while the beginning speed with the Classic Shredder 6 GUI was
over 100kN/s after a minute or two. So it is not a trivial difference at
ordinary time controls! But if running infinite analysis for an hour or more,
the different GUI's tend to approach the same long term kN/s speed
approximately. (I was using the Shredder 7.04 UCI engine in this particular
test.)
