There is an old saying: "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." Delfi 4.2 is among the strongest freely available chess engines. It is written in Delphi, which is an OO Pascal variant. Some of the time critical routines are in assembly, but the same thing goes for some of the successful C and C++ chess engines. So I don't think that Pascal can be dismissed.
