Subject: Fritz 6 Sparring Mode and a "human-like" opponent.

Hello everyone.

I'm searching for that elusive "computer opponent that plays human-like chess at
handicap levels". I quite like the idea of Fritz's Sparring Mode, since it
seems to result in a more human-like opponent that Friend Mode.

However, my Fritz 6 with the latest available service pack doesn't seem to
behave properly in Sparring Mode. Sometimes I can set it to "easy" and "point
out wins", and the entire game the red indicator light doesn't come on. Other
times it seems to work.

My questions:

Does anyone know how sparring mode works? Does Fritz always make a mistake
during the game? Can fritz make multiple mistakes during the game? If so, what
is the frequency of these mistakes?

What is considered to be the best service pack for Fritz 6, and which one has
the best Sparring Mode support? Where can I get this one (if it isn't the
latest one available on the chessbase web site)?

What other engines (other than Fritz 6) work well with sparring mode in the
Fritz 6 GUI?

Does anyone have an alternative "computer opponent that plays human-like chess
at handicap levels" to recommend? I'd like one that plays a reasonable game but
allows some tactical opportunities, preferably at 1800 to 2000 FIDE ELO level.

Thanks very much for any helpful answers to my questions.

Travers
