For starters - do not buy a "Palm" brand palm - or else you will never play thii
pocket rocket. There are two kinds of Palm, those that run the Plam OS (like a
Palm) and those that run Microsoft Pocket PC - like an Ipaq or Axiom.

Right now - Pocket Fritz 2 is the strongest playing program on a handheld. They
only run on Pocket PC. Search for "Pocket PC". There are quite a few devices
that have this OS.

That could change if Tiger gets converted to native arm OS for a Palm. Tiger is
the strongest engine for a Palm. Search for "Palm OS". There are also quite a
few devices that also run Palm OS.

They are both excellent. The Pocket PC suits my needs better -but I had Palm
for a while and loved it. Chess Tiger for the Palm is flawless, as well as
Chess Genius. Tiger is at least 100 points stronger than Genius IMO.

Fritz 2 (It a Shredder engine) is also excellent, but it does cost almost $50.
For about half the money, Pocket Grandmaster is a better deal. It comes with 3
different engines, one nearly as strong Fritz 2 (Ruffian) and two others SOS and
Gromit. It also handles variations better in pgn files. The Pocket PC engines
were noticably stronger than the 68030x Palm using the Tiger and Genius
software. I have not tried Tiger on the newer faster Palm , thus cannot express
an opinion for the faster Palms.

Of course, if you're like me, you just get them all.
