I have witnessed defeats of the silicon monster and draws by a player who should be completely outclassed, he has not even adapted his style - as he is using the compute as a sparing partner as part of his preparation for human opponents. True if you took a ten game match the score would have been rather poor but he gets draws and the odd win. Therefore if you study you opponent’s play/weaknesses and your opponent can not do the same - this may help tip the balance. Regardless of the 'fairness' of the matches - highlighting holes in the books/programs can surely only help the programmers improve their creations? How many of the engines out there 'estimate their rating on the hardware' and then adjust their contempt values to determine if they will play for a draw? Also how many the engines are in step with the book lines they play? e.g. you select the aggressive options in the engine but the line chosen from the book is passive. Anyway I like to see these games. Shaun
