Subject: End of an Era

Enrique is right even returning from the dentist: an era is ending, gold or
silver, you name it. In fact was ending since long time ago. Prices are falling,
individual, artisan kind of programmers cannot get anymore an income of this and
go out bussiness or never go in seriously and so and so. And this happens all
around. Three days ago the owner and director of one of the last european
computer chess magazines gave me a telephone call to tell me he is almost out of
busines and surely his magazine will dye soon, if it is not already dead. Maybe
it is not very scientific to add aples with bananas, but you cannot forget also
the troubles of SSDF endeavor has shown, the disaparition of some companies, the
vanishing of some programmers, etc, etc. I do not say Dooms Day has come, but
certainly we are going into a new era where David Crockets will have no room and
certainly Ed is one of those Crockets. I hope he will survive because he
deserves to survive, but slashing prices in half so soon is not a signal of good
bussines or at least show that bussines will not continue for him as before. As
much as my data are reliable, I would say he is trying to cope with the inminent
arrival of a new monster package with the kind of prices Mindscapes has been
dealing in this field long ago. What else he can do? There is a lot more to say
about this, but this is enough for now. Strangelu enough, I have no feeling of
happyness due to the fact I have not already bought Rebel and now I can get it
at half price. As an spanish saying say: bread for today, hunger for tomorrow.
