I agree that the sparring mode seems like an ideal way to play a computer. it
forces you to look for tactical shots you would have against a human but then
plays its strongest to try to prevent you form winning the won game.

I have fritz 7 and it does better than this. However it seems to give the same
opening tactical shot almost every game. eg., 1.e4 d5 2. ed qxd5 3. Nc3 qf6??

Nobody I know can really anser the tough questions. So maybe not. I would like
to know if it playes its best moves except when it give the tactical shots. I
don't knwo the answer to this. Also does it punish all of your mistakes?

It is supposed to unless you blunder the begining.

Yes it can. I have seen the light fgo off more than one time /game.

Again I don't knwo this. see above. I too woudl like tot knwo if it punishes
all of your mistakes.

Not sure I doubt they are still working at improving fritz 6.

I'm not aware of any other programs that do sparring mode.(but there could be
many)

I'd be curious about this too. However I am a beginner @1200. Power chess 98
was a program that seemed ok but it forces an opening down your throat that you
may not like.
