It is used if the USE_ASM define is set.

As noted in the programmer's guide, I make no claim that this is portable to
non-Intel (or AMD) hardware. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's not. The book code in
particular makes assumptions about endianness and structure ordering that may
not be valid for a Mac.
