Subject: interesting blitz game

Author: Mike Byrne

Date: 18:29:37 08/09/03

This is a new Crafty setting that is looking promising. Thegame was decided at
two critical junctures - a sacfice by Crafty and a computer looking move by
Ruffian 1.05. Two be fair to Ruffian 1.05 - I have played hundreds of
multiple hundreds of blitz games and Ruffian is quite a challange to modify
Crafty. Of late, Crafty has scored somewhere between 41% (swful settings) to
50% (best so far). Typcially the number of games in each match range somewhere
between 90 & 150. This latest setting is 66% - but only after 3 games.

I was watching this as itwas being played and instinctilvely though Crafty was
going to play dc3 and thought that position was not real promising. When I saw
22...d3! played - it perked my interest - but at this point there was no
indication the move itself was decisive.

White's position looks rock solid here.

There is doubt that the best move here for black is a 30. f6 as it sets up a
potential pawn stram roller here.

With 34.Rb8, white clearly has the initiative.

Even to the trained eye of this patzer enthusiast - 36.Bh7?? does not look good.
Crafty has code to avoid a move like this. After 37...g6!!, the bishop is
doomed and now the passers are much more of a threat. Crafy would play 37.Be4
and get the Bishop out while there is still a chance.

After 39...Rc6, 40Qd5+!! is a much tougher defense. I'm not sure if Ruffian has
learning, I suspect it may -- since it only takes 3 seconds to see Qd5+ on
analysis after the game. Interest in hearing from other users on this position

The sequence of moves initiated by Ruffian with Nxe5 is suicidal. On analysis
after the game, it no longers considers this move. It's the story of winning
the battle and losing the war.

After 47.Rxe5 , white is a piece up , a pawn down with a clearly losing
position. If your engine does't show black is winng by 5 or 6 points within a
few seconds, you may have some tweaking to do. ;>)
