Well this only works for non-capturing/non-checking moves-- otherwise, it would just capture all of the opponents pieces and mate him :-) (that's what the search is for!!) I imagine you could use it to test any position-- I mainly use it to make sure my development isn't wacky as I don't have a book impemented yet.
