Using the initiative is a useful skill to aquire. And gambit play teaches you
that. Be wary of totally unsound ones such as the Moller, the Latvian and Morra.
I couldn't care or believe less in classical gambits. The classical gambits are
about forcing the play in to fast and furious action. And they do so from
balanced positions with rudimentary developement. And the result is predictable.
The gambiteer gets a dead even simplified position or must fight on in a worse
position. Sound gambits might be a good way of drawing a comp though. Sound
gambits being Kings gambit and maybe even Evans and Goring gambit.
Modern gambit play OTOH is quite another beast. One player sacrifices material
to create a dynamic unbalanced position. I couldn't care less if I'm a pawn down
in my favourite Grunfeld or Pirc line. The compensation would be obvious to the
practiced eye. Or being a pawn down as white in the Catalan.
