Go to http://freechess.org/ the webpage of FICS. Joining doesn't cost anything,
and their download section has client software for different platforms. If you
use Windows 95/98 I suggest CClient. Winboard is also good.

Chess.net, at http://www.chess.net/english/home.html, has both free and paying
memberships. You can play with their Java interface, download their free
"light" interface, or pay them for a deluxe version.

The ICC, at http://www.chessclub.com/, is probably the best place to play
online, particularly for strong players. You can play free forever as a guest,
but you will probably get more good games if you join, and that will cost you.
Their own interface, Blitzin, is the best to use if your platform will support
it, otherwise they have links to other interfaces. The interfaces are mostly
freeware, whether you join or not.

Have Fun!
