Testing old vs new version of an engine may of course be interesting
to study the difference of moves/evaluations and so on. But for Elo
rating and practical play, it does not make much sense. The new version
will/must almost ever be stronger than the previous one. If not, why
bring a new version? The results betwenn old/new versions are meaningless.
What counts are only the comparison of matches old/new versions against
other programs. Just my opinion.
