In a CCC poll the primary reason given for using a chess program/computer was to help in analyzing games/positions (109 votes), as opposed to, for example, playing aganist the program/computer (68 votes). If an 1800 player is serious about finally beating Harry down at the club on Thursday night, or a stronger player is serious about obtaining an OTB or correspondence tittle, and there is any chance at all that the newest/strongest program might help, then, given the hours that the player is already devoting to analysis, the newest/strongest program is an extremely cost/time-effective tool, even if it is only 20 points or so stronger than the previous "best".
