Use of the top programs in
correspondence games is part of a broader type of use: humans can use the top
programs to help them analyze games and positions, whether in analyzing OTB
games they have played, correspondence games they are playing, or opening
positions they might wish to play. In a CCC poll the primary reason given for
using a chess program/computer was to help in analyzing games/positions (109
votes), as opposed to, for example, playing aganist the program/computer (68
votes).

If an 1800 player is serious about finally
beating Harry down at the club on Thursday night, or a stronger player is
serious about obtaining an OTB or correspondence tittle, and there is any chance
at all that the newest/strongest program might help, then, given the hours that
the player is already devoting to analysis, the newest/strongest program is an
extremely cost/time-effective tool, even if it is only 20 points or so stronger
than the previous "best".
