Dear Friends at CCC,
I just read several of the postings concerning Chessmaster 6000. I recently
purchased a copy of this program myself and I am very impressed. I have
purchased every program in this line since Chessmaster 2100 and I believe that
"Mindscape" (formerly known as the "Software Toolworks") has produced another
fantastic product. I found some bugs that were annoying in 5500, fixed in 6000.
For example: go into CM 5000 or 5500 and design your own custom board with
black and white squares. Then, select the large red and beige staunton
pieces to add to the board -- you'll notice that the pieces look like they are
covered with spider webs whenever a piece is placed on a white square. I made a
custom board set up as soon as I had the 6000 out of the box to see if this had
in fact been fixed. They did not disappoint me! To me I feel that CM 6000
fills a definate niche. It is true that many of the advanced players will not
learn too much from this program, but everyone from beginner to expert class
will find more chess then they will ever beat! Picking a personality with a
face attached to it was also a nice touch -- not a serious tool, but a fun one!
I have made a rather extensive collection of professional software and all of
them -- including CM6000 -- can beat me quite easily in anything that resembles
a speed game or a championship game. I have some high level draws and some wins
at Postal game speeds against these machines. But what I have most of all is a
grand collection of nearly a dozen different teachers (I speak most of the
professional programs)that can play at the Master level. That gives me a chance
to learn about what each opponent can do and what the games can teach me. I
have used these tools at the local elementary school as well as at the county
College. My opinion? I am greatful for the work that guys like Marty Hirsch
has contributed to my enjoyment of playing chess. Keep up the good work, guys
-- I'll keep buying and learning until I can beat one of the top programs at
tournament time controles, or I run out of money, or I die an ever improving
player. Again, Thanks for the work Trapper
