Subject: Gambit & test position for engines!

Not long ago, I posted a game I played against Fritz8 without pondering, 2 secs
per move... and 1 hour for me (fair, eh?). I tried a very aggresive attack
breaking the opening, and it turned out to work! I don't think something like
this will work if I let Fritz think a little bit longer :)

But if you take position 6 as a starting position,

[D]rnbqkb1r/ppp2ppp/5n2/8/2ppP3/2N2N2/PP3PPP/R1BQKB1R w KQkq -

...and then move Bxc4?! most engines most likely will evaluate at least +2.00 in
favour of black; and they are probably right!

The question is: How long does a machine need per move (average) in order to
stop the white counter-attack?

I decided to try with a different engine, for a change. Movei was the one I had
installed at the very moment, so don't take it personal, Uri!

1.Bf1xc4 d4xc3 2.Bc4xf7+ Ke8-e7 3.Qd1-b3 Nf6xe4 4.0-0 c3xb2 5.Bc1xb2 Nb8-a6

With a longer time control it wasn't so easy:

movei00_799 WB2 17 MB
1.Bf1xc4 d4xc3 2.Bc4xf7+ Ke8-e7 3.Qd1-b3 Nb8-a6 4.0-0 Na6-c5 5.Qb3-c4 Nc5xe4
6.Rf1-e1 b7-b5 7.Qc4-b3 Qd8-d6 8.Nf3-g5 Bc8-b7 9.b2xc3 c7-c5 10.f2-f3 h7-h6
11.Ng5xe4 Nf6xe4 12.Qb3xb5 Ra8-b8 13.Bf7-b3 Bb7-c6 14.Qb5-a6 Qd6-d7 15.f3xe4
Rb8-b6 16.Qa6-e2 Bc6-b5 17.Qe2-h5 Qd7-c7 18.Re1-d1 g7-g6 19.Qh5-d5 c5-c4
20.a2-a4 c4xb3 21.a4xb5 Ke7-e8 22.Bc1-e3 b3-b2 23.Be3xb6 Qc7xb6+ 24.Kg1-h1
Qb6-d6 25.Qd5-a8+ Ke8-f7

My own engine is so bad, that is not worth this test, by the way.

The interesting thing about this, I think, is the evaluation of the black king's
safety, and the white mobility/positional advantage compared to the black one.
Give your engine a try, and see how it goes.

Regards,

  Jaime

P.S.- I used an Athlon 1800+ with 512 Mb.
