Yes, Tim, you are exactly right about "bested."
Still I qualified my terms by "this usage."
When Uri says something like, "The other player beated him
quicker." I feel I can appropriately substitute, "The other player bested him in
faster style," with much more clarity and truth to the intent of the Speaker
because in this case the beating refers to a contest and not a physical attack,
so the winner has bested the loser.
