And sometimes in difficult rook endgames you have to give away a rook to force a promotion, so KQKRPP and even KQPKRP is not useless. An important pawn endgame of course deserves a closer look: d) KPPKPP The checky endgame with queen and pawn is not a rarity: e) KQPKQP You can extend this list by rook endgames were one side is behind by an exchange and go on to endgames with different coloured bishops or tricky endgames with knights so on ... have a good time (you'll need it ;-) Best regards, Jens
