I hope I can make expert (1753 >now) before the age thing kicks in (turning 40 in a few months!) Go for it! Here's a player I played against in the mid-80's when he was in his late 20's and rated around 1750 , became an expert a few years later. http://www.64.com/uscf/ratings/10157251 I (along with others) believe most players rated under 2000 study openings too much and do not work on tactics sufficiently. The proof is that any computer rated near 2000 without any opening book knowledge will win against under 2000 player most of time just on tactics. Once your over 2000 is the time to focus on the finer points of the game. I used to study a lot of openings - in hindsight it was probably time wasted time for me. I try now to work on tactics, pattern recognition and developing a plan - and staying away from blitz. 2000 may be a reach for me now - but if I can to 1800 I can than plan to get to 2000 next. Tactics, tactics tactics.
