"Chess Mates" is the easiest-entry chess tutorial software I've seen (I have Chess Mates, Maurice Ashley Teaches Chess, and Chess Mentor). Every kid I've tried it on (and my wife) found it engrossing. Chess Mates comes on a hybrid PC/Mac CD-ROM - the USCF sells it, and undoubtedly other distributors. Chess Mates has lots of animated pieces moving, digitized voice instruction, etc. There are three modules: * The Rules - takes about an hour to work through * Tactics (forks/pins/etc.) about 4-5 hours worth * Play against computer (10 levels). If the 7-year old already knows the material in the first two modules, then Maurice Ashley Teaches Chess would be the next step up. Note that a PC/Mac CD-ROM for that is available - ICD sells it, for one. (http://www.icdchess.com) -RAF
