Actually when it comes to Shredder, I have nothing but problems with the UCI
engine. I just use the Shredder 7.04 that comes with the latest Chessbase GUI
patch.

I gave up on the Shredder UCI engine a long time ago.

I much prefer the Winboard engines frankly. Not as many problems, and I have
been using them for years.

Crafty, Comet, Phalanx, Ruffian are my favorites.

Other than those, Chess Tiger seems to be the easiest to run. Just set it up,
and you can play locally, via ICS, auto232... you name it. Great product.
