Maybe it is a little slow, but even on a PIII 500 a Grandmaster must be very careful. Actually, computers are reaching a speed that they have a new problem developing, The Law of Diminishing Returns. It won't be long that you'll need a speed up of 100x before you see any difference in playing strength. Remeber the faster you search, regardless of the positions looked at, it takes an increasing amout of time to reach the next ply. Which I can't overstate the importance, the tree _will_ explode as it's exponential. So when we hit 10 Ghz, you may need at least 1 Thz before it will make a noticeable change in rating/playing strength. So soon you'll be able to save some money for Chess Programmes or what have you as it will take a long time before you have a hundred fold speed up. Of course from 10 Ghz to 20 Ghz will benifit in other areas, so you'll buy the machine anyways;-) Terry
