If we say that a doubling of speed adds 50-70 >elo points and the program is say 2650 with ponder=on then you get a 2600 >performance with ponder=off which is equivalent to a sprinter missing a toe or a >boxer missing a finger :) hi jonas: i completely disagree with u; the time management with ponder on and off for the different eng are quite different; an engine can think in its opponents time and move instantly and then spend a disproportionately large time over critical moves and relatively less time over straight forward positions; with ponder off there is not so much time variation between moves; s704 and j8 often spend a lot of time over critical moves and much less in simple positions with ponder on; fritz on the other hand does not sheow this sort of behaviour to the same extent; this difference in time management has consistently shown whenever i test f8 against s704 or j8; with ponder on s7 andd j8 beat fritz; with ponder off it loses to fritz by a wide margin; with ponder off cm9000skr almost manges to beats f8 and shredder704; with ponder on it gets totally thrashed; hence my analogy; which i think is quite valid the poeple (such as your self and myself who have 2 cpus/2 identical comps to test on will never test with ponder off; and the people with a single comp who test with ponder off do not realise what a huge different testing with 2 comps makes; and hence they keep trying to present their results on this forum; these results are in my opinion only of amusement value!
