I think the question is whether a development such as this will stimulate innovation in chess software or kill off innovation altogether. I think in the short term, it is a good development, but in the long term it is not. I am starting to question the future for most chess software. We are approaching the point now where I cannot conceive of any "killer feature" that will make a program a "must have". Fritz 5 has most of the features that I would want in a playing program, and CB 7 has almost every feature I would want in a database program (and more). Not a very cheery outlook for others trying to make money in the market... Bob P.
