If you are not a strong player you should not worry too much about the opening. Search for opening books which explain the ideas of the opening, and not only supply one variation after another (only variations is boring!). I also prefer books which analyze the whole games, even to the ending. Unfortunately I have not played or studied chess for several years, so the books I remember are quite outdated. I personally liked a series of books by Karpov, "How to play the open game", "How to play the semi-open game", "How to play the closed openinings" and "How to play the semi-closed openings". They are quite old, but you can supplement them with recent games. Also, analyze your games at home with calm, that is the most important thing. Look where you or your oponent played some known weaker move, and try to avoid that in the future. New moves played by amateurs are not necesarily "bad", but double check them anyway. José.
