The programs evaluation is the main line of move selecting. Once it gets to the depth it wants then it calls qsearch to see if the position is 'quiet' or not or if there are any captures or checks to be had. Many programs limit the number of searches in qsearch to keep the program from chasing ghosts. Almost all programs depend on tactics as they find it hard to program positional play.
