Subject: the game cost Ed his first WCCC victory in 1986

Author: Mike Byrne

With my apologies to Ed Schroeder, I am presenting below the game that cost Ed
his first WCCC championship ( a chess computer championship held every 3 years).
In the 5th round, if Rebel would have won this game, the championship would
have gone to him based on tiebreaks. Instead Rebel lost and the championship
went to Bob Hyatt with his Cray Blitz program (forerunner of Crafty) for Bob's
second WCCC championship. So far Bob is the is the only programmer to win this
championship twice. It is fair to say that this game probably cost Ed a few
dollars as the sale of his programs would have increased from a tournament as
prestigious as the WCCC.
