That can be important later on. There are several reasons for a program (and human!) to use an opening book: - behave reasonably. Nobody should spend 3 minutes on a response to e2e4 - save time for later. It's better spent on something interesting - know good lines Getting good lines may not be the most important! Almost any program can find the e7e5 response pretty fast anyway. Why not let it remember that? Bo Persson
