Hi Mike,

Ancient history, very nice :-)

It was my first international tournament, nobody ever heard of Rebel except in
Holland, the thing was running on an accelerated 8-10 Mhz 6502 Apple IIE. Rebel
lost the game because it didn't had check-extensions simply because I never
heard of the technique.

In those days one had little to zero access to computer chess articles so you
were re-inventing the wheel multiple times. Naturally after the tournament the
first thing I did was to implement check-extensions.

Well, the tournament was the start of my professional career as suddenly Hegener
& Glaser were most keen to offer me a good contract, those were the days a world
championship was gold so complaining about that lost game would have been most
ungrateful.

Anyway, it was good Rebel did not become world champion, the program's true
strength did not justify that. Cologne 1986 was a lucky shot and I think that
Hitech and Cray Blitz were the real big boys at that time.

My best,

Ed
