I've been following with interest a recent thread about not using qsearch, and I have a few questions: Although I believe that qsearch could be selectively skipped (or even removed) in favour of a smarter kind of SEE, I have been coward enough not to try that approach because I though -rather assumed- that all of the strongest engines do a typical capture/promotion qsearch in one way or another (some do checks), I also assumed that surely everyone has done enough testing on this, and therefore it was a nearly-well-known-fact that this type of qsearch must be used for the program to play strongly. Genius was a great program, but it has stuck to its original design and doesn't seem to have evolutioned with the new trends in chess programming, which is a pity. I just didn't know that Genius didn't have a qsearch as we know it today, but what really striked me was that post saying that Junior doens't have one neither. Then even Mr. Hyatt mentioned something like using SEE for the last capture only could just work fine because errors don't happen so often to be important. I would like to give it a try myself when I have time, but.. has anyone else tried this more or less succesfully before? And, can anyone confirm the no-qsearch approach in Junior? I'd be really encouraging to know it before I try. Thanks in advance. Sincerly, Jaime
