Subject: endgame eval

Author: James Long

Date: 20:21:09 11/01/98

In the following position (from ECE3100), why is Ra1
better than Ra2+?

position 0001
R7/8/8/8/3K4/8/3kp3/8 W - - 0 1

solution is Ra1

10... 17.25 626760 1.900 Ra2+ Kd1 Kd3 e1=N+ Ke3 Nc2+ Kf2 Kd2
                                      Rb2 Kd1 Rb1+ Kd2 Rh1 Kd3 Kf1

my move is ...Ra2+
[wrong][-][-][36730][10.00]

I ran the initial position, along with the position after Ra1
and the position after Ra2+ through my program's eval with
the following output:

As you can see, my poor program desperately needs endgame
knowledge. I've put it off way too long. Problem is, *I*
don't have any endgame knowledge!!! Help is greatly
appreciated.
