It was reported here earlier that different programmers utilize hash tables in different ways. You may recall that I had asked whether or not it might make sense to standardize the way hash tables are used so that it might be possible to use the table contents when switching engines [during analysis of a game]. The idea was that the new engine could use information left behind by the earlier engine. Everybody here said that this kind of standardization would be impractical because the way hash tables are used is an important part of the overall engine design. Different engine designers have different ways to use hash tables. One must infer from this that the "correct formula" would depend on the way the programmer sets up and uses his hash table. Bob D.
