 Several assumptions have been made regarding this "problem".
The normal Sunday paper puzzle like those submitted by GM Robert Burn
& GM Tal Shaked are the "Mate in Two" types. When have you ever seen a
Mate in 3 or Mate in 4 in these columns?

Occasionally, Composition competitions or Tournaments are held; in
conjunction with newspapers and/or magazines.

These competitions of Mate in 5 ususally are in the realm of
"help mates" or "self mates". In the self mates, the tradition is that
Black move first, and force White to mate him.

The position has not been identified as a "study", and the conclusion that
it is flawed is premature.

It would have been helpful, if the original poster had included the
entire newspaper article.

I don't recall the Engine that solves "help mate" puzzles; some of you may have
it, and can clarify the situation.
Please consider the Puzzle as such, see if there is a Mate in 5, and Post
your results.
