Subject: How Good is ChessMaster 9000?

Author: Karl Dammer

I am curious how skillful is this program in real terms?

I have been playing it and at first it seemed invincible to me evn on the
1600-1700 rated Hans who I began against. He beat me so badly and so consistenty
I actaully went to the Classroom and did the tutorials and studies Joshs games
and things.
I'm curious now how good CM is actually is. I can outclass the 1600-1700 raters
with a fair degree of ease now and if my endgame was a bit better I could
probably win the CM9000 personality itself with regularity. In that particular
case my weak endgame means even taking a strong lead into the endgame winds up
with me being slowly and surly twsited around into a loss.
I guess this sounds like an ego filler 'how good am I' question, and I guess in
some ways it is. I am quite buoyant about having learned from all the tutorials
and lessons and adavanced to a much stronger game.

It just leaves me curious, was I just rank awful to begin with and should have
been able to hold my own anyway or is the CM actually quite a skillful
challenge?

All in I am just very happy , I learned chess very young but I never really took
it any further than the fun side of it. I suppose I was always decent against
the normal human players you encounter in your life. I never really developed a
strong technical side to my game having always thrived on a sort of instinctive
aggresive form of play. I haven't played for a few years which is strange
because I have always loved the game, I guess I never really had anyone to play
with regularly so let it slip. Coming back to it and getting into a more
intimate style of game has been immensely rewarding for me, I am really enjoying
the game again.
Having gone from the certainty that I would never be able to match the computer
and being extremely frustrated by the fact its ease of winning, to a complete
turnaround is just great for me I think. I wish I had spent more time learning
the priciples and conceptual ideas before. It's amazing what you can do with
just a little wiser approach and opening play.

How does the CM compare to a real rated opponant?

Thanks, and hi everyone since this is my first post. :)
