There appeared a very queer Hiarcs 9 engine over the net 2 or 3 months ago. At least some of my friends who are keen on correspondence chess downloaded it using the donkey stuff. Strangely enough, when testing it in classic time controls versus Shredder 7.04 and Fritz 8.023 the strength of play was just a bit lower than of the above. It should be noted, though, that this engine played quite differently than Hiarcs 8. It was more attacking and king blood thirsty than the predecessor. However, there was a very strange line "versyin falsa" in the engine properties area. What could that mean on earth? Noone of use had any idea. Was that a beta version or cracked pirate engine? Anyone knows? Of course, now that a brand new Hiarcs 9 programme is on sale at Chessbase, that misterious net journey matters very little. When scanning through the Uniake's interview to Thorsten Chub placed at his site, I felt that the way he was describing his new programme was very much alike the style that the net wanderer indulged in. It seems anyway the engine was a beta Hiarcs 9.00? or something. It would be very interesting, though, to see how high the new Hiarcs 9 would make on SSDF now.
