I think it was quite obvious that he was meaning 'hardware independant' as in 'you can use it no matter what hardware you have'. Large pieces of the kernel and especially GCC are 'generic' and are 'hardware independent' in your sense as well, which is exactly the reason why the above applies. -- GCP
